What to Expect

Taking the first step towards therapy may feel challenging. Understanding what to expect may help you feel more comfortable and prepared.

Initial Phone Consultation

Our journey together starts with a brief, complimentary 15-minute phone consultation. To schedule this consultation, please send me an email, contact me by phone at 978-831-9726, or complete the online submission form.

The consultation appointment is not a therapy session, but rather an opportunity for us to connect briefly. We will discuss what brings you to therapy, and you can ask me any questions you may have about my approach. We will also discuss fees and scheduling. This conversation helps us determine if we might be a good fit to work together. If so, we will schedule an initial intake assessment session. If not, I'll provide referrals to other trusted colleagues who may be a better match for your specific needs.

Prior to Your First Appointment

I will send you an invitation to my secure patient portal where you will find my intake forms and paperwork. These documents include consent forms, additional information about my practice, and questionnaires about your background and current concerns. Completing these forms beforehand allows us to dedicate our entire first session to talking, rather than administrative tasks. Please fill these out at least 48 hours before our scheduled appointment.

Initial Intake Assessment

Our first few sessions will involve a thorough evaluation of your concerns and goals for treatment. These sessions also serve an important role in helping us both decide if we are a good fit. In addition to confirming whether my expertise matches your needs, it will also be important for you to evaluate whether you feel comfortable working with me. I strive to create a safe, warm, non-judgmental space and believe a strong therapeutic relationship is a central component of therapy.

Ongoing Therapy Sessions

Ongoing therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long and occur weekly, though we may collaboratively choose to adjust the length and frequency to best meet your needs. I find it helpful to schedule a consistent weekly appointment time; however, if this does not fit with your schedule, I will do my best to accommodate you.

Overall therapy duration varies person to person and depends on a variety of factors though many problems can be effectively addressed in relatively short spans of time (~15-30 sessions). Our focus will always be on moving you toward your goals in a supportive and compassionate environment and we will regularly monitor your progress and tailor treatment accordingly if needed.
